Sisters of the Solstice 2024

Photography and Embodiment Retreat

Memories from the Summer Solstice, 2024

  • A Journey of Art and Connection

‘‘This past June, I had the incredible opportunity to join a solstice retreat in Northern Iceland alongside a talented group of other female artists from all over the globe. Iceland’s raw landscapes— from stark volcanic plains to serene, mist-laden waterfalls— became our canvas and inspiration.  Together, we embraced the endless daylight, capturing the fleeting magic of the midnight sun, which lent an ethereal quality to each shot and brought a surreal, otherworldly vibe to our work.

Working with Bjorg and Svala, our two extraordinary models, was a highlight of the retreat. Bjorg’s quiet strength and Svala’s fierce energy added a rich dynamic, each bringing her own distinct presence that complemented the rugged Icelandic backdrop. Through freezing rain, mist, and sun, they moved gracefully, making it easy to capture powerful, emotive images that felt both intimate and timeless. Their comfort with the group and willingness to connect so openly allowed us to go deeper artistically, capturing images that felt raw and genuine.

The retreat wasn’t only about photography; it was a celebration of female creativity, camaraderie, and the shared joy of discovery. We found inspiration in each other’s unique perspectives and styles, pushing creative boundaries and forging a bond that I will carry forward in my work. This experience was transformative, blending art, nature, and the strength of sisterhood under the midnight sun—truly unforgettable.’’

  • Unforgettable

“My time at the Volur Photography Retreat was simply unforgettable. Each day was a new adventure in capturing Iceland’s stunning landscapes, from rugged coastlines to serene fields with Icelandic horses. Working alongside our two inspiring models, Svala and Björg, added depth and authenticity to our photoshoots, as their energy matched the natural beauty surrounding us.

Beyond photography, there was a powerful sense of community. Mornings often began with yoga or meditation, helping us connect not only with ourselves but also with the other attendees. The organizers brought such a range of talents—from creative guidance to mindfulness practices—that each moment felt purposeful and supportive. They cultivated a safe, empowering environment, making it easy for us to experiment and share our artistic visions.

Returning home, I not only had a collection of breathtaking photos but also new friendships and an invigorated creative spirit. This retreat was more than a workshop; it was a journey in art, connection, and personal growth. Highly recommended for any creative seeking both inspiration and community in one of the most magical landscapes on earth.”

  • Gift of a Lifetime

My husband gifted me this experience for my birthday and this was the very first photography workshop I have ever attended. I had no idea what to expect and it turned out to be so fun, nourishing, and rewarding for the soul! I met lovely women from all over the world, who share my interest in photography and I got to create with models who were so inspiring. We had a whole weekend together in a great place and shared amazing meals.

  • Connection & Sisterhood

"Volur retreat is unique among photography retreats because of their focus on building community, connection and sisterhood. The care and thoughtfulness present throughout the days we had together soothed my soul. My only wish was for it to be longer."
